They're used as synonyms, but they're not the same. An AI assistant responds and helps you when you ask; an AI agent executes tasks on its own until it fulfills an objective. Understanding this difference is key to knowing what to expect from each tool and where the technology is heading. We explain it without jargon.

"AI agent" is probably the most repeated term in technology, but very few can explain how it differs from an assistant like the one you already use every day. That confusion is not minor: it defines what tasks you can delegate and how much autonomy you're giving a tool. Here we clarify the distinction with concrete examples.

What an AI assistant is

An AI assistant is a conversational and reactive tool. You ask it a question or request something, and it responds. Think of a chatbot that drafts an email, summarizes a text, or explains a concept to you. It's extremely powerful, but it works on demand: without your instruction, it does nothing.

Everyday examples: asking a chatbot to rewrite a message, generate ideas for a campaign, or translate a document. In all cases, the assistant responds to a specific request and waits for the next one.

What an AI agent is

An AI agent is autonomous and goal-oriented. Instead of responding to an isolated request, it receives a goal and breaks the work into steps, makes decisions, uses tools (like searching the web, sending emails, or modifying files), and executes that sequence until finished, with little or no intervention from you.

Example: instead of asking it "write me an email", you tell it "organize a meeting with the team next week". The agent checks availability, proposes a time, drafts the invitation, and sends it.
