Meta Platforms Launched SAM 3 and SAM 3D

Publicado el

Meta Platforms once again captured the attention of the tech world with the launch of SAM 3 and SAM 3D, the new versions of its renowned visual segmentation model "Segment Anything". These tools promise a significant evolution in the way applications understand images, objects and three-dimensional spaces, bringing computer vision closer to more intuitive and accessible experiences.

If the first SAM already revolutionized automatic segmentation in 2023, the new versions expand that potential with greater precision, speed and, for the first time, the ability to interpret depth and volume. This opens the door to uses ranging from logistics and security to entertainment, education and immersive experiences.

What exactly did Meta announce?

Meta introduced two complementary tools:

  • SAM 3: a more precise and faster version of the original model for segmenting objects in 2D images.

  • SAM 3D: an extension capable of understanding three-dimensional structures, identifying volume, depth and shape.

The company highlights improvements in performance, scalability and segmentation quality, which makes these models an attractive option for both large companies and independent developers.

Why does this launch matter?

Image segmentation is a critical technology in applications of all kinds: from editing apps to security systems, medical analysis or augmented reality. With SAM 3 and SAM 3D, Meta aims to reduce operational costs and improve precision in tasks that previously required large labeling teams or highly specialized models.

  • Greater efficiency: less time processing images and more speed to automate flows.

  • Lower costs: less manual work and less need to train models from scratch.

  • More fluid experiences: better recommendations, smarter interfaces and more precise visual analysis.

  • Real scalability: the ability to process large volumes of images without loss of performance.

How could it be used in real life?

Although the models are complex, the applications are very concrete:

  • Customer service: automatically analyze photos sent by users (for example, damaged products) to resolve complaints.

  • Retail and e-commerce: recommend products based on what the user sees in a photo.

  • Security and banking: detect visual anomalies in documents or transactions.

  • Logistics: interpret shipments, volumes and internal routes using 3D models.

  • Education and simulation: create more realistic training environments in 3D.

A step toward an AI that understands the world in a more human way

Meta's bet is clear: to build models capable of reasoning about objects, spaces and scenes with a level of understanding that until now was only found in very specialized models. SAM 3 and SAM 3D represent an advance toward more multimodal systems, capable of combining images, text and now three-dimensional geometry.

In practical terms, this means smarter experiences in everyday products and new opportunities for industries like health, robotics, design, logistics or entertainment.

Challenges and opportunities

Like any emerging technology, there are challenges to solve: visual data privacy, biases in models, infrastructure costs and business adoption. However, Meta positions itself as one of the references in open AI, which could accelerate the arrival of these capabilities to startups and small teams.

For those who work in technology, product design or automation, this type of model will mark a before and after in how we interpret and process visual content.
