We started with six students and one subject. Coderhouse was born from a concrete frustration: the school we wanted did not exist, so we built it.

Today we are the largest live online education platform in Latin America. This is the twelve years that came after.

The origin

Christian Patiño wanted to start a company in technology. He could not code, and he did not know anyone technical to partner with, so he enrolled in an institute to learn.

The course did not leave him satisfied. From that came the question that became the company: what would the place he wished he’d had look like?

In 2014, with Pablo Ferreiro, he put in $5,000 of savings to find out. They rented a room in a Palermo coworking and opened the first course: six students, one subject, web development.

What that course made went entirely into the second. What the second made went into the third. For seven years that was the whole model.

There was no building of our own. We grew by renting. We added coworking rooms as we added courses, and cities as we added cities. First the largest cities in Argentina. Then Chile, Uruguay, and Peru. All in person. All paid for by the previous course. Four countries. Zero rounds.

We turned it off

That was the first real turn. The in-person model was working and growing. We left it anyway: 100% online, 100% live, six months before the pandemic.

It was not a comfortable decision. It meant taking apart the only thing we knew how to do well. The rented classroom was a ceiling, not an asset. A cohort in another city could still raise a hand. We never went back to a course you watch alone.

The world moved to where we already were

In March 2020 the rest of education went online overnight. We had already been there for months: platform, instructors trained, live format proven.

Coderhouse grew as it never had. We closed the year with 34,000 students and 35 courses, as the largest live online education platform in Latin America.

First capital, seven years later

We entered Y Combinator at the start of 2021 as a profitable company. That is unusual in edtech. We were not raising to exist. We were raising for speed.

Mid-year we raised our $18M Series A, led by Monashees with Reach Capital. That money went to two things and nothing else: product, and regional expansion. Mexico that year. Brazil the next. Instructors still teach. Instructors still grade.
